TAKE THE FAMILY ON THE TRAIL
A family-friendly community and the great outdoors come together in Southern Utah, and the best example is the trail system put together by the city of St. George. Some 13 trails crisscross the area for a total of 25 miles of easy hiking — and more are in the works. The plan is to eventually link all the major population centers in the area with paved trail.

Most of the trails are paved, allowing handicapped and stroller access for families, and many have city parks, picnic facilities and restrooms along the path or at the trailhead. And the scenery along the trails ranges from the red rock of the Red Cliffs Desert Reserve to the trailing-branched trees along the Virgin River. To find a trail that suits you and your family, see our map located at the center of this magazine — and don’t forget to take it with you.

Utah’s Dixie abounds with outdoor activities for families. Here are a few more to try:
Tonaquint Nature Center — 1851 S. Dixie Drive. The nature center at Tonaquint Park hosts Family Nature Nights the first and third Mondays of the month as well as other programs. Call 435-634-5948 for information.

St. George Skate Park — 171 E. 1160 South, next to the Fiesta Fun Center. The skate park features 15,000 square feet of street skating and bowls for skateboards, scooters and in-line skates. For info on the park, call 435-634-5850.

Community and neighborhood parks — various locations. The St. George area has five community parks and numerous neighborhood parks ranging from 2 to 24 acres. They feature picnic facilities and playgrounds, and some of the larger parks offer basketball courts and other recreation facilities as well. Call 435-634-5869 for information on area parks.

Canyons Complex —1890 W. 2000 North. This facility covers 35 1/2 acres and has seven ball fields two picnic areas and a playground. There is plenty of room for kids to run — and you can catch a ball game while you are there.
